Cylindrical Roller Bearings

In cylindrical roller bearings, the rolling elements are in linear contact with the raceways, therefore radial load capacity is high, making the bearings suitable for high-speed applications. Cylindrical roller bearings are available in both single and double row constructions and are typically designed with a cage with solid inner and outer rings. Double-row cylindrical roller bearings have higher radial rigidity and are used primarily for precision machine tools. Some cylindrical roller bearings have no ribs on either the inner or outer rings, so the rings can move axially relative to each other. These bearings can be used as free-end bearings. Cylindrical roller bearings that have two ribs on one ring and just one rib on the other ring are capable of taking some axial load in one direction. Cages for cylindrical roller bearings are typically made of pressed steel or machined brass, but sometimes molded polyamide cages are used. Cylindrical roller bearings are also available in sealed or split designs. The sealed design protects the rollers from contaminants, water and dust, while providing lubricant retention. This provides lower friction and longer service life. Split bearings are often used in applications that are difficult to access – such as in crank shafts – to simplify maintenance and bearing replacements.

Cylindrical roller bearings are available in many design variations:

  • Type NU: This bearing can only carry radial loads because there are no flanges in the inner ring. They can accommodate both expansion and contraction. The bearing rotation causes minimal friction between the rings in relative axial displacement.

Applications:

  • Cement and coal pulverisers
  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Planetary gears
  • Gear boxes
  • Centrifuges
  • Mining equipment
  • Aggregate processing
  • Transmissions
  • Type N: These bearings can carry radial load only and they too can accommodate both expansion and contraction. The bearing rotation causes minimal friction between the rings in relative axial displacement. Type N bearings may be used in one or two positions for shaft support where other means of axial location are present. The outer ring has a cylindrical bore without ribs and the inner ring has two ribs.

Applications:

  • Cement making machinery such as vertical, ball and rolling mills; crushers; gear reducers, spherical pillow blocks; conveyor drives; trunnions and rotary kilns
  • Power generation machinery such as gearboxes, pulverisers, and gear drives
  • Oilfield equipment such as mud pumps, swivels, block hooks, draw works, traveling blocks, crown blocks and top drives
  • Type NJ: These bearings have double-ribbed outer and single-ribbed inner rings and can support heavy radial loads, in addition to light unidirectional thrust loads up to 10 per cent of the radial load. The thrust load is transmitted between the diagonally opposed rib faces in a sliding motion rather than a rolling one.

  • Type NF: These bearings have single-ribbed outer and double-ribbed inner rings and can support heavy radial loads, in addition to light unidirectional thrust loads up to 10 per cent of the radial load. The thrust load is transmitted between the diagonally opposed rib faces in a sliding motion rather than a rolling one.

  • Type NP: These bearings have a double-ribbed inner ring and a single-ribbed outer ring with an abutting loose rib, which allows the bearing to provide axial location and to carry light thrust loads in both directions.
