Pulleys, Roller Chain Sprockets and Taper Lock Bushes

A pulley is a wheel that supports movement and change of direction of a taut cable or belt. Pulleys are used to transfer power between the shaft and cable or belt. Some pulleys are supported by a frame or shell. In this case, the pulley is not used for transferring power to the shaft, but rather to guide the cable or exert a force. The shell that supports the pulley is called a block, and this type of pulley is often called a sheave. Pulleys may also have a groove or multiple grooves around their circumferences for placing the cable or belt. The system driving the pulley might be a rope, cable, belt, or chain. Sprockets work in conjunction with roller chains to power all types of machinery. Sprockets are available in different configurations; tooth counts and bore sizes. Taper lock bushes, also referred to as a taper bushes or taper fit bushes, are locking mechanisms commonly used in power transmission drives for connecting pulleys, sprockets, and couplings to shafts. The taper lock bush is pre-bored and keyed to match the required shaft and keyway diameters. Tapering the outside of the bush is necessary to match the component bore to the shaft.
